Koiran hankinta / Purchasing a dog

The purchase of a dog is a big decision and the purchase should always be considered long and carefully because the purchase of a dog must not be a spur of the moment. The dog buyer should understand that the dog will be in the family for 10-15 years and will need care throughout his life. A dog is not an object that can be exchanged for another or simply sold on if the dog or its behaviour does not appeal. It is therefore good to ask yourself a few questions before purchasing a dog.

1. Why do I want myself to have a dog?

I hope you don't, at least because someone you know has a nice and cute dog. Discovery animal houses and dog sales forums have enough for a while 'nice and cute' dogs bought on a whim waiting for a new end-of-life home.

2. Do I have time to take care of the dog?

A dog's life should include more than just pee visits and food times. It is not enough for a dog to take it to pee 3 times a day and fed. The dog requires attention, training and affection, and it is not intended that the dog is always at home alone waiting for the owner to come home.

3. Do I have to offer the dog a good home?

Is your home big enough for a dog and is there such conditions that are safe for the dog. The dog needs a safe and peaceful home. The dog should be allowed to rest peacefully when it is necessary.

4. Can I afford to keep a dog?

Feeding a dog, supplies, vet fees and any medications, really cost a lot. The potential surgery could cost thousands of euros without insurance. If you want insurance for your dog, add this even further to the cost. Hobby activities are not free either. For example, a dog needs veterinary care when you need it, not when you can afford it.

5. Which breed dog do I want? Am I a couch potato or an exercise person?

Choose a dog breed based on the characteristics you want the dog to possess. Find out about the characteristics of different breeds of dogs before deciding which type of dog you want. Do not choose a dog according to which breed is “in fashion”. If you choose a working dog breed, you must be prepared for the fact that the dog requires significantly more physical activity and stimulants than, for example, a companion dog breed. Every breed of dog should also be trained, whether the dog is large or small. Training and socializing the dog is always the responsibility of the owner.

6. Do I have a problem with why caring for a dog might sometimes be forgotten?

The dog does not belong to the family where alcohol or other intoxications are a problem.

7. Am I willing to take responsibility for the dog and its welfare for the next 10-15 years?

The owner has responsibility for the welfare of the dog as well as education throughout the dog's life. The owner is always and in every place
responsible for his dog's behaviour and any damage the dog may have caused.
