Amerikanpitbullterrieristä käytetään yleisesti nimitystä pitbull etenkin maailmalla mutta myös Suomessakin. Pitbull -nimityksellä tarkoitetaan kuitenkin lähinnä koiratyyppiä (bull-tyyppinen) ei itse rotua. Puhdasrotuinen, rekisteröity "pitbull" on amerikanpitbullterrieri (American Pit Bull Terrier).

Amerikanpitbullterrieri (apbt) on vanha työkoirarotu minkä esi-isät kulkeutuivat siirtolaisten mukana USA:n. Apbt:n kaltaisia koiria on ollut olemassa jo satoja vuosia ja koiria on käytetty alun perin mm. metsästyksessä, maalaistaloissa karjankasvattajien apuna, vahtikoirina ja jopa lapsenvahteina. Jalostuksen myötä rodusta on tullut alkuperäistä esi-isäänsä kookkaampi ja voimakkaampi. Rodun sitkeyden ja periksiantamattoman luonteen takia rotua alettiin käyttämään koiratappeluissa ja tietyt tahot alkoivatkin varta vasten jalostamaan rotua koiratappelutarkoitukseen. Koiratappeluiden seurauksena amerikanpitbullterrierin alun perin hyvä maine ikävä kyllä tahraantui ja siitä ei ole vieläkään päästy eroon sillä joissain maissa vieläkin järjestetään koiratappeluja ”maan alla”, vaikka laki kieltääkin ne. Huonon maineen seurauksena useat maat ovat kieltäneen mm. rodun tuomisen maahan, koska on katsottu, että rotu on vaarallinen myös ihmiselle, ei pelkästään toisille koirille koiratappelutaustan takia. Todellisuudessa kuitenkin lähes kaikki koirarodut saattavat olla yhtä lailla vaarallisia ihmiselle väärän omistajan ja jalostuksen sekä puutteellisen koulutuksen takia. Nykyään on selvästi huomattavissa mm. mediassa, että koirien aiheuttamissa vahingoista uutisoidaan mielellään pitbull -tyyppisten koirien aiheuttamat vahingot. Aina koira ei ole kuitenkaan ole ollut edes pitbull -tyyppinen koira saati sitten amerikanpitbullterrieri.

Apbt:n käyttötarkoituksen ja ulkonäkömieltymysten mukaan rotua alettiin aikoinaan jalostamaan eri suuntiin minkä seurauksena nykyään on samoista esi-isistä lähtöisin olevia rotuja amerikanpitbullterrierin lisäksi mm. stafforshirenterrieri, amerikanstafforshirenterrieri, amerikanbulldoggi ja bullterrieri. Rotuja on jalostettu niiden käyttötarkoituksen mukaan eri suuntiin, toiset ovat lihaksikkaampi ja isompia, toiset taas pienempiä ja sirorakenteisempia. Amerikanpitbullterrierejä on pääasiallisesti jalostettu joko näyttelytarkoitukseen tai työkoiraksi.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is commonly referred to as pit bull, especially in the world, but also in Finland. However, the pitbull designation essentially refers to the type of dog (bull-type) not the breed itself. A purebred, registered “pitbull” is an American Pit Bull Terrier.

The American Pit Bull Terrier (apbt) is an old breed of working dog whose ancestors passed along with the emigrants of the U.S. Dogs like the Pitbull have been around for hundreds of years and the dogs have been originally used in hunting, farmhouses as an aid to livestock farmers, as watchdogs and even as babysitters. With breeding, the breed has become stronger and more muscular than its original ancestor. Due to the tenacity and unyielding nature of the breed, the breed began to be used in dogfights, and certain parties began to purposely breeding the breed for dogfighting purposes. As a result of the dogfights, the initially good reputation of the APBT was sadly tarnished, and it has still not been rid of it, because dogfights are still held in some countries “underground” even though the law prohibits them. As a result of the bad reputation, several countries have banned the introduction of the breed, because it has been considered that the APBT is also dangerous to humans, not just other dogs because of the dogfighting background. In reality, however, almost all dog breeds may be equally dangerous to humans due to improper ownership and breeding, as well as inadequate training. Nowadays it is clearly noticeable, for example, in the media that the damage caused by dogs is happy to report the damage caused by a “pit bull”. In reality, however, the dog may not have been even a pit bull type let alone a purebred APBT.

According to the use and appearance preferences of the pit bull, the breed began to be processed in different directions, and as a result, today there are breeds from the same ancestors, in addition to the American Pit Bull Terrier, American stafforshire terrier, Stafforshire terrier, American bulldog and Bull terrier. Breeds have been bred according to their intended use in different directions, some being more muscular and bigger, while others are smaller and more graceful. American Pit Bull Terriers have mainly been bred either for exhibition purposes or as a working dog. Some representatives of the breed are suitable for both uses.
